The 1997 Missouri River Flood That Did Not Occur
Publication: Waterpower '99: Hydro's Future: Technology, Markets, and Policy
Abstract
A potentially catastrophic flood was averted in 1997 as the largest runoff in 100 years swelled the system of six large U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoirs located on the Missouri River. Record high system releases were required to evacuate excess storage, but were timed to minimize impacts downstream. More than $5.2 x 109 in flood damages were prevented in 1997 by the Missouri River main stem operation.
