Temperature Effects on Subsurface Flow Constructed Wetlands: Performance in Midwest

Abstract
This paper documents the performance of a newly built subsurface-flow constructed wetland system for wastewater treatment, during the initial and start-up period, under a variety of loading and operating conditions associated with northern climates. The results indicated that effective and sufficient CW seasonal removals of TSS, VSS, CBOD5, COD, and fecal coliform were achieved. Temperature appeared to affect CBOD5 and COD removal rates. Furthermore, nitrogen and phosphorus reductions were not as effective and varied with wastewater temperature.
