Introducing the ASCE Journals’ Early Career Editorial Board

Publication: Journal of Bridge Engineering
Volume 25, Issue 1

Introduction

ASCE’s Early Career Editorial Board (ECEB) program is intended to provide a pathway for early career individuals interested in pursuing an editorial leadership position with ASCE Journals. The ECEB program gives members an opportunity to participate on an editorial board under the mentorship of a current associate or chief editor. The ASCE Journal of Bridge Engineering has an editorial board with a membership of approximately 50. The Journal plans to recruit several ECEB members who will work under the mentorship of selected associate editor(s) and the chief editor to help with the mission of the Journal, while earning very valuable editorship experience. The ECEB members will also get an opportunity to become familiar with policies and procedures of the Journal’s peer review process.

Qualifications

The ideal ECEB member is within 1–3 years of having earned their Ph.D. and is a member of ASCE or an ASCE institute. Participants in the ECEB program should be familiar with the peer review process and should have experience writing critical reviews. At the end of their term with the ECEB, participants will have familiarity with selecting reviewers, resolving differences of opinion among reviewers, recommending editorial decisions, and promoting a journal.

Specific Responsibilities

1.
ECEB members should provide reviews for papers assigned by the editor or mentor editor on an expedited basis. The editor may decide the annual number of reviews that is not excessive for an ECEB member.
2.
At the request of and in consultation with the mentor associate editor, identify potential reviewers for submissions.
3.
Act as social media ambassador for the Journal or a section of the Journal. Promote highlighted content such as editor’s choice papers, award-winning papers, special collections, conference collections, and most-downloaded papers.
4.
Attend editorial board meetings and take minutes.
5.
At the discretion of the editor, ECEB members assist with the coordination of special collections.

Term

ECEB members will serve a 3-year term on the Journal’s ECEB.

Application and Selection

Interested candidates should submit a resume that includes name, affiliation, detailed summary of qualifications, areas of expertise, and list of publications to the chief editor of the ASCE Journal of Bridge Engineering at [email protected]. The first page of your attachment must have your identifying information, such as name and email address.
Potential candidates are required to have at least six publications directly related to bridge engineering research within the last 5 years, which may include their Ph.D. dissertation. Applications will be reviewed by the Journal’s associate and/or chief editors. The Journal of Bridge Engineering aims to appoint between 3 and 10 qualified ECEB members, depending on the needs and areas of research to be covered. The deadline to submit an application to ECEB is November 30, 2019.
