Wave Transmission Through Submerged Apertures

Publication: Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering
Volume 113, Issue 6

Abstract

The method of matched asymptotic expansion is used to develop theoretical solutions for the diffraction of oblique incident waves by an infinite vertical barrier with a small submerged slit in constant water depth. The geometry of the barrier is uniform in the y‐direction (one of the horizontal axes). Theoretical solutions are obtained for transmission and reflection coefficients for the cases where the width of the barrier is in the same order of magnitude as the wavelength. The accuracy and range of validity of the analytical solutions are verified by comparing with numerical results obtained by integral equation methods. The asymptotic solutions appear to be also valid for the cases of thin barriers.
