Simplified Methods to Calculate Wave Loadings on Vertical Wall Breakwater

Publication: Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering
Volume 113, Issue 6

Abstract

The comparison of the calculated minimum widths of a vertically‐walled breakwater derived from Sainflou and Molitor pressure diagrams shows that, for all design conditions, the Molitor widths are initially larger than those from Sainflou. Additionally, the divergence of the Molitor width away from Sainflou is well within the design criterion set for prestudy calculation and can be used safely in breakwater designs with a subsequent increase in construction costs. In contrast, above a certain wave height to breakwater depth ratio the situation is reversed and Molitor's empirical diagram must be applied carefully.
