Moiré Applied to Real‐Time Inspection of Highways

Publication: Journal of Transportation Engineering
Volume 112, Issue 2

Abstract

A rationalized planning of highway maintenance calls for continuous and periodic inspection of the highways. Two parameters of utmost importance in qualifying the quality and behavior of the pavements are the rut depths and water depths. A determination of these parameters permits the identification of the strips that present the risks of aquaplaning. The aim of this paper is to propose an optical method based on the moirS principle, and to describe an instrument that enables the recording, in real‐time, of the topography of a 4‐m wide road strip. A display of the cross‐sectional profiles is obtained by digital image processing of the recorded information.
