Ultimate Strength of Wood Walls in Tension—Pilot Study

Publication: Journal of Structural Engineering
Volume 115, Issue 7

Abstract

The tension resistance of conventionally constructed wood‐frame walls was determined experimentally in a pilot study. A series of tests was performed using a combination of gypsum board, foam, and plywood as sheathing material. The ultimate tension resistances of the test panels are compared to the ultimate strength of a typical nailed roof‐to‐wall connection and to the resistance required by the Uniform Building Code. The design implications are examined.
