Characteristics of Cable Nets

Abstract

The paper is concerned with the behavior of cable nets. The initial stability of these nets is investigated and the effect of an external load applied to these nets is studied. It is shown that the behavior of cable nets is conditioned by the nature of the nodal equilibrium equations. In most cases where there are more internal unknown forces in the cables than the number of nodal equilibrium equations, the effect of external load is similar to the case of ordinary reticulated shells and the nodal displacements are due to the elasticity of the members only. Where the number of unknowns is equal to or less than the number of equations, the nodal displacements caused by external load are due to rigid body movements of the net members as well as their elastic properties. A method of analyzing these displacements is proposed. The so‐called fitted load where the nodal displacements are due to the elasticity of the members only is investigated. The behavior of these two type of nets is compared and the implication for the design of cable nets is discussed.
