Dynamic Lateral‐Load Tests of R/C Column‐Slabs

Publication: Journal of Structural Engineering
Volume 111, Issue 3

Abstract

The response of interior reinforced concrete plate‐column connections in a laterally loaded structure is investigated. Nine specimens were tested, five statically and four dynamically. This paper describes results from dynamically tested specimens. Experimental variables included slab reinforcement ratio. Nominal slab dimensions were 6×6ft(1.8×1.8m). Slab thickness was 6 in. (76‐mm). The column was square with plan dimensions of 1×1ft(0.3×0.3m. Reinforcement layout in the slab was isotropic. Dynamically tested specimens provided data on the strength, stiffness and energy‐dissipation characteristics. For joint rotations of approximately 0.02 (related to earthquake design) the stiffness of the slabs corresponded to that calculated from a fully cracked section for one fifth of the slab width, and the associated equivalent viscous damping was approximately 5% of critical.
