Drain‐Spacing Calculation Considering Influence of Evaporation

Publication: Journal of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering
Volume 120, Issue 3

Abstract

This paper holds that the widely used equations E=E0(1-H/Hmax)n needs further study relating to its use in calculating drain spacing when field evaporation influence is considered. Research indicates that the coefficient β (i.e., E/E0) for ground‐water evaporation is not always a constant even when the buried depth of ground water remains unchanged at a certain level. Accordingly, drain spacing calculated by this traditional method tends to be overestimated. Largely owing to the continuous development of research on modern soil‐water dynamics, the theoretical analysis and calculation equations of ground‐water evaporation can reflect the basic relationships between ground‐water evaporation, evaporation capacity, and the buried depth of ground water more accurately. This paper introduces new research achievements in this respect and also suggests a new model for the calculation of drain spacing that accounts for evaporation influence.
