Pressure and Source Size Effects on Cavitation Damage

Abstract

Cavitation damage tests were conducted in a rotating disk facility by varying the source size, the source velocity and the chamber pressure. Two dimensional triangular prismatic shapes were used as cavitating sources to reduce the significance of Reynolds number in interpreting the test results. The results indicate that the velocity exponent at maximum cavitation damage conditions is 5.95 and that maximum damage occurs in a narrow band of cavitation numbers. The results also indicate that the critical size of the source for maximum erosion increases with cavitation number.
