Since the early part of the twentieth century, two-dimensional limit equilibrium (2DLE) analysis has been the scientific community’s primary means of slope stability calculation. However, it is well established that the input parameters to 2DLE, namely, soil strength and anisotropy, slope geometry, pore water pressures, failure surface geometry, applicable correction factors, and loading conditions are all inherently uncertain. Effective modeling must account for these uncertainties statistically. Unfortunately, most of the key statistical parameters, such as the safety factor statistical distribution and standard deviation ($s_d$), are unknown and must be estimated by the analyst. In response to this growing need for statistical information, a database was established from the literature of 157 different failed slopes and the corresponding published 301 safety factor (SF) calculations. The database, which covered more than five decades of slope stability research, also included a number of the slope stability factors, including analytical method used, stress approach (effective versus total), assumed slip surface geometry, slope type, applied correction factors, and soil Atterberg limits. A temporal analysis found no evidence that SF prediction or deviation had significantly changed. A log (base 10) normal distribution was found to adequately describe the SF data, with a (nontransformed) mean of 1.03 and a (transformed) $s_d$ of 0.087, but the pronounced curvature of the residuals indicated significant, unresolved slope factors, further investigated in the companion paper.

In response to the growing need for statistical information regarding slope stability risk analysis, this work applies inferential analysis to a compiled database of 157 failed slopes and corresponding 301 safety factor (SF) calculations. As presented in the companion paper, this database also includes a number of slope stability factors, including analytical method used, stress approach (effective versus total), assumed slip surface geometry, slope type, applied correction factors, and soil Atterburg limits. Although the SF data were found to be fairly well fit by a lognormal distribution, pronounced curvature of the residuals was observed, likely related to various unaccounted slope factors. In response, inferential statistics are used in this paper to analyze the effects of analytical method, slope type, soil plasticity, and effective versus total stress analysis. ANOVA hypothesis testing indicated significant differences between analytical methods and significant interactions between slope types and pore-water stress approaches. Direct SF calculation methods, such as infinite slope, wedge, and the ordinary method of slices were found to produce SF near 1 as expected, but higher order methods in general, and force methods in particular, predicted safety factors significantly greater than 1. Clay content alone was not a discernible influence on SF calculations. A reduced factor ANOVA model was developed to predict SF, given analytical method (a main effect) and the interactions between analytical method with both slope type and pore-water pressure approach.

Rainfall-induced slope failure occurs in many parts of the world, especially in the tropics. Many rainfall-induced slope failures have been attributed to antecedent rainfalls. Although it has been identified as a cause of rainfall-induced slope failure, the pattern or distribution of the antecedent rainfall has not received adequate attention. In this study, parametric studies were performed by using three typical rainfall patterns, identified by analysis of available rainfall data for Singapore and two different soil types to represent high- and low-conductivity residual soils of Singapore. Antecedent rainfall patterns were applied on soil slopes and a transient seepage analysis was conducted. The computed pore-water pressures were used in stability analyses to calculate the safety factor of the slope. Results indicated that antecedent rainfall affected the stability of both high-conductivity (HC) and low-conductivity (LC) soil slopes. However, the stability of the LC soil slope was more significantly affected than the HC soil slope. Patterns of antecedent rainfall controlled the rate of decrease in factor of safety, the time corresponding to $F_{\mathrm{s}(\min )}$ and the value of $F_{\mathrm{s}(\min )}$. Delayed rainfall pattern resulted in the lowest minimum factor of safety, $F_{\mathrm{s}(\min )}$, for the HC soil slope, and advanced rainfall pattern resulted in the lowest $F_{\mathrm{s}(\min )}$ for the LC soil slope.

The anisotropic nature of response and degradation of shear strength from the undisturbed condition to the remolded state are two fundamental and challenging aspects of response in some clay deposits. This paper presents a comprehensive, yet flexible and practical, version of the SANICLAY model and its application to a seismic slope-stability problem. The model is based on the well-known isotropic modified Cam-Clay model with two additional mechanisms to account for anisotropy and destructuration. The model has been efficiently implemented in a three-dimensional (3D) continuum, coupled, dynamic, finite-difference program. The program has been used to analyze the seismic response of clay slopes to gain better insight into the role of the previously mentioned parameters in real applications. Different aspects of the model, including anisotropy and destructuration, and their effects on the earthquake-induced strains and deformations in the slope have then been explored and presented. By providing a link between the model parameters and the soil’s undrained shear strength, which is a well-known engineering parameter, a benchmark comparison has been made between the results of the present advanced model and those of an engineering approach. To this end, a modified Newmark sliding-block analysis has been used, in which the yield acceleration is gradually reduced as block sliding progresses during the earthquake. It is observed that although the two analyses display the same trends, the modified Newmark sliding-block method provides conservative results compared with those obtained from the developed simulation model.

As a part of an earthquake hazard mapping program being undertaken by the U.S. Geological Survey in the St. Louis metropolitan area, surficial geologic mapping and subsurface geotechnical data have been compiled into a three-dimensional geographic information system (GIS). The potential for soil liquefaction was then spatially evaluated by using subsurface information from 562 boreholes for an assumed M7.5 earthquake emanating from the New Madrid Seismic Zone. Geotechnical data (standard penetration test $N$-values, overburden pressure, and depth-to-groundwater) and the scenario peak ground accelerations ($\mathrm{PGA}=0.1$, 0.20, and $0.30g$) were applied to evaluate the factor of safety (FS) against earthquake-induced liquefaction. The liquefaction potential index (LPI) method was used in these evaluations because it allows for calculations of FS with depth for 10–25 discrete stratigraphic horizons overlying the bedrock across the St. Louis metropolitan area. LPI values were derived from the correlation between calculated LPI values and the depths-to-groundwater within late Quaternary stratigraphic units. The St. Louis metropolitan area was then classed according to four levels of severity of risk from liquefaction: (1) no liquefaction potential, (2) little-to-no likelihood, (3) moderate, and (4) severe.

Characterized by unmanned excavation and remote controlling, the new pneumatic caisson (NPC) method has advantages in deep excavation such as deep shield tunnel shafts and some underground construction close to the existing structures or facilities. When adopted in urban areas, it is very important to control the ground deformation during a caisson construction. For this purpose, field measurements of ground deformation were conducted during a tunnel shaft construction in Shanghai soft ground, in which the NPC method was used. On the basis of the particular construction procedure of a pneumatic caisson, one kinematic mechanical model was proposed for evaluating the influence of NPC construction on the surrounding strata. This model was incorporated into a finite-element (FE) program. By comparing the FE-predicted results of the proposed model and the field measurements, the accuracy and reliability of this model were verified.

Ground movements induced by shallow tunnels affect the safety of nearby underground and aboveground structures. Therefore, the reliable prediction of these movements is important. A transparent soil model is used to investigate not only the surface settlement profile induced by shield tunneling, but also the distribution of soil deformation within the soil mass near the tunnel. The observed surface settlements are consistent with the normal probability curve commonly used for predicting settlement, with only the inflection points or trough width parameters somewhat different. The measured data are consistent with field measurements in that the trough width parameter is independent of the volume loss and linearly proportional to the tunnel depth. An analysis of the displacement field inside the transparent soil models indicates that the subsurface settlement trough at different depths can be approximated by a normal probability curve; and the horizontal displacement can be expressed by the trough width parameter and the volume loss, at the point at which maximum horizontal displacement occurs at the point of inflection. Additionally, the measurements indicate that subsurface ground movements can be in excess of the observed surface settlement, which can adversely affect underground utilities.

Asphalt concrete is used as a water barrier (interior core or upstream facing) in embankment dams. This paper investigates the behavior of hydraulic asphalt specimens subjected to cyclic loading in a triaxial cell. The specimens were tested at various sustained static stress states and temperatures and at maximum cyclic shear stress levels corresponding to severe earthquake shaking of the dam. The cyclic modulus versus mean sustained static stress showed an approximately linear relationship in a logarithmic diagram, and an empirical expression was developed to determine the cyclic modulus. At a mean sustained stress of 1.0 MPa, the cyclic modulus at 20°C was about 900 MPa; at 9°C, it was 1900 MPa and at 3.5°C, about 2500 MPa. The damping ratio was found to be between 0.07–0.30, depending on stress state and temperature level. The number of load cycles (up to 6000) had no significant effect on the magnitude of cyclic strain, and the cyclic loading was documented to have little effect on the postcyclic monotonic stress-strain-strength behavior and permeability (watertightness) of the asphalt concrete.

This study presents the influence of the interparticle friction angle on the cyclic behavior of granular materials using the two-dimensional (2D) discrete-element method (DEM). The numerical sample was modeled with oval-shaped particles, whereas the isotropically compressed dense sample was prepared from the initial sparse sample using periodic boundaries. Biaxial cyclic shear tests were simulated with different interparticle friction angles. It was noted that the width of the stress-strain cyclic loops becomes thin when the interparticle friction angle increases. It was also noted that the induced fabric anisotropy is more pronounced during unloading than loading. Moreover, a strong correlation between macro- and microquantities was observed for strong contacts during cyclic loading.

This study presents a new empirical criterion for assessing the potential of internal erosion and suffusion of granular soils. This method considers the bimodal structure of a soil having a primary coarse fabric and loose finer particles based on the porosities influenced by the particle size distribution and the degree of compaction. By comparing the representative particle size of a loose finer fraction with the controlling constriction size of a primary coarse fabric, a distinct boundary between internally stable and unstable soils with respect to internal erosion may be found.
