Advanced Pavement Technologies

Publication: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering
Volume 30, Issue 9
The special collection on Advanced Pavement Technologies is available in the ASCE Library (https://ascelibrary.org/page/jmcee7/advanced_pavement_technologies).
Within the past decade, there have been tremendous developments in new paving materials, design, construction, and maintenance. In the materials area, for example, warm mix asphalt technologies and the effective use of reclaimed asphalt pavements have been hot topics. Quite a few related research projects have been funded by the US National Science Foundation, State Department of Transportation, and other agencies. This special collection includes nine technical papers in the area of materials and pavements related to such development. Some of these papers were submitted to the First International Conference on Transportation Infrastructure and Materials, Xi’an, China, in held in June 2016. These selected papers were revised to be included in the special collection of the Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering. The articles published in this special collection include:
“Preliminary Laboratory Evaluation of Methanol Foamed Warm Mix Asphalt Binders and Mixtures” (You et al. 2017);
“Characterization of Interface Bonding in Asphalt Pavement Layers Based On Direct Shear Test with Vertical Loading” (Ai et al. 2017);
“Failure Mode and Bonding Evaluation at the Interface between Asphalt Surface and Semirigid Base” (Zhang et al. 2017);
“Using Artificial Neural Networks to Predict the Dynamic Modulus of Asphalt Mixtures Containing Recycled Asphalt Shingles” (Liu et al. 2018);
“Utilizing Fluorescence Microscopy for Quantifying Mobilization Rate of Aged Asphalt Binder” (Ding et al. 2017);
“Dynamic Modulus Characterization of Alaskan Asphalt Mixtures for Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design” (Zhao et al. 2017);
“Gradation Segregation Analysis of Warm Mix Asphalt Mixture” (Li et al. 2018);
“Experimental Study on the Relationship between Permeability and Strength of Pervious Concrete” (Cui et al. 2017); and
“Laboratory Investigation into the Modification of Transport Properties of High-Volume Fly Ash Mortar by Chemical Admixtures” (Du et al. 2017).
The guest editors would like to thank Dr. Louay N. Mohammad of Louisiana State University for his guidance and support during the production of this special collection. The guest editors would also like to acknowledge the significant contribution from Professor Jie Han, Hainian Wang, Yingwu Fang, and Chung Wu. Extreme gratitude is due to the contributing authors for submitting their best work to this special collection and for their patience during the review and publication process. Finally, the guest editors wish to thank all the dedicated reviewers who contributed their valuable time and participated in the manuscript review process.
