In the last decade, China’s government has heavily invested in highway construction projects. Several hundred thousand miles of roads have been built, and more are being planned and built, including eighteen national highways that will run from east to west, nine national highways that will link the country’s south and north, and seven expressways connecting the Beijing metropolis. In this context, the Third International Asphalt Conference was held on August 6 and 7, 2009, in Qingdao Province, for the exchange of recent research and development results among international researchers and practitioners involved in material characterization and field validation for predictions of long-term asphalt pavement performance. Out of the submitted papers, 10 papers were invited for publication in this special issue. The manuscripts were reviewed according to ASCE procedures.
This special issue provides an archival source of information on material characterization, theoretical modeling, and experimental techniques for asphalt and modified asphalt binder properties; modeling of pavement materials; testing and investigation of binders; and new techniques for material modification.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to all of the authors for their hard work in preparing their manuscripts. Sincere thanks are also expressed to the Conference Scientific Committee and many professionals for assistance in reviewing the manuscripts.
