Density and pressure have great influences on the strength, dilatancy, and stress-strain behaviors of geomaterials. Been and Jefferies (1985) proposed a state index, defined as the difference between the void ratio at the current state and that at the critical state, to capture the influence of the density and pressure on the mechanical behaviors of geomaterials. Bauer (1996) and Wan and Guo (1998) proposed a state index, the ratio of the void ratio at the current state to that at the critical state. The authors proposed a new state pressure index as the ratio of the current mean stress to the critical mean stress corresponding to the current void ratio. Another state index (Ishihara 1993; Ishihara et al. 1998), cited as Eq. (3) in the authors’ work, is incorrect. Eq. (3) should be rewritten as follows:
Is=e0ee0ec
