Editor’s Note

Publication: Journal of Environmental Engineering
Volume 132, Issue 4
The April issue of JEE includes the editorial “The Role of Hydraulics and Fluid Mechanics in Environmental Engineering Publications,” written by Bruce A. DeVantier, JEE Associate Editor and Associate Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Southern Illinois University. In addition, the 2000 Simon Freeze Lecture by Paul Woodruff, “Educating Engineers to Create a Sustainable Future,” is included in this issue. The recipient of the award, Paul Woodruff, had the following comments:
I am greatly honored to have been asked to present the annual Simon W. Freese lecture at ASCE’s annual Pipelines & Environmental Engineering Conference. I have never met him but know of him as one of the icons of civil and environmental consulting. He was a pioneer in our profession, developing one of the earliest activated sludge plants in the U.S. The 31 MGD plant he designed for San Antonio was also one of the largest constructed before 1931. During World War II, he served on General Eisenhower’s Supreme Headquarters staff as part of the Allied Expeditionary Force and was the public works administrator in Germany and the occupied territories.
However, Simon Freese was probably best known as a water resource specialist. As a partner in Freese, Nichols for more than 50 years, he led the firm through a period of major public works development in Texas, most notably the design of nearly 100 water and sewage systems and more than 200 dams and reservoir projects. He received many honors, including ASCE’s decision in 1975 to establish this award in his name. His big shoes will be hard for me to fill.
Other technical papers cover topics that include water quality; air, water, and wastewater treatment; and groundwater remediation. Authors of these papers are from the United States, Korea, Taiwan, Poland, Germany, India, and Canada.
