Rethinking Barrier Island Restoration: Building a Resilient Louisiana Coast
Author: David S. EleyAuthor Affiliations
Abstract
Louisiana stands on the front lines of the United States’ fight against coastal erosion and land loss. A combination of rising sea levels, subsidence, wave action, human development, and sediment depravation is causing staggering erosion along the Gulf Coast. In many areas, Louisiana’s coastline is disappearing at the rate of 16 mi2/yr, or almost the area of a football field every hour. Coastal erosion threatens communities, critical industries like fishing and energy, and delicate coastal ecosystems. It’s an urgent problem in need of urgent solutions. Fortunately, Louisiana’s Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) is working with engineering and environmental science firms to reduce land loss and protect the state’s coast in a sustainable way.
