Abstract
When the time came for a water utility in southeastern Pennsylvania to expand the capacity of its 20 mgd (75,700 m3/d) conventional water treatment plant, the entity opted to upgrade its facility to include membrane technology and replace its gravity sand filters. In doing so, the facility became one of the first to install membranes in the same footprint as that required by the sand filters. At the same time the utility positioned its facility to accommodate the more stringent regulatory requirements seen on the horizon.
