Pavement Roughness and Rideability: A State-of-the-Art Review
Publication: Transportation Engineering Journal of ASCE
Volume 108, Issue 6
Abstract
This paper reports on the results of a review of the literature and ongoing research concerned with pavement roughness and rideabiity. The material covers definitions and concepts, subjective rating methods, objective (physical) measurements, statistical methods, ongoing research and uses of roughness, profile, and rideability data. Much of the past work in pavement roughness and rideability has stressed the physical aspects of the road surface, and the analysis of such physical data, rather than the public's perception of pavement rideability defined in terms of the human response to roughness. Only a few researchers have considered the psychological issues of scaling and the data analysis necessary to define subjective ratings and relate these ratings to physical measures of roughness. Ongoing research by both the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the National Cooperative Highway Research Program will attempt to address these issues.
