Traffic Analysis for Large Construction Project

Publication: Transportation Engineering Journal of ASCE
Volume 108, Issue 6

Abstract

The paper presents various characteristics of commuter-traffic generated during the construction of Hartsville Nuclear Plant in a rural area in Tennessee, and a procedure for estimating such traffic for similar projects. The variations in daily traffic volumes and peaking characteristics are examined for locations nearby the construction site. For the commuter traffic generated by the site, automobile occupancy rates and the use of vans and buses are examined. The study includes the spatial distribution of commuters and it is found that the relative distribution of employees among surrounding counties can be predicted with a simple formulation of gravity model. A step by step procedure for predicting the traffic generated by large construction sites is presented.
