Buried Pipelines: Providing Flexibility at Structures
Publication: Transportation Engineering Journal of ASCE
Volume 108, Issue 3
Abstract
When differential settlements occur bmtween a structure and the connected buried piping, the pipe is subjected to longitudinal bending, and joints deflect. The length of the pipe section immediately adjacent to the structure must be selected to keep both of these considerations within allowable limits. A method of determining the appropriate length of pipe section is developed. The method can be applied to pipe of differing materials and with different types of joints, thus permitting rational selections to be made for specific site conditions. Representative pipe and joint properties are presented with examples.
