Observations on Mortar Lining of Steel Pipelines
Publication: Transportation Engineering Journal of ASCE
Volume 105, Issue 6
Abstract
The paper describes the experience obtained with the SBVMWD pipeline. Phase 1 exhibited significant cracking, and later some rusting, probably due to inadequate thickness and possible water hammer. The paper describes results of a comprehensive quality control instituted for Phase 2. The variability and distribution of thicknesses, estimated percentages of lining below specified thickness, and variation of the lining thickness over the period of lining are presented. The drying shrinkage behavior of the lining, observed by in-situ measurements, is also described. Statistical analyses of circumferential and longitudinal cracking and correlations with measured environmental, lining, and test pressure variables are presented. Observations of rust at untreated cracks after one year of service, are reported. Some needed research is indicated and recommendations are made for corrosion protection management of large steel pipelines.
