Design Procedure for Asphalt Railway Roadbeds
Publication: Transportation Engineering Journal of ASCE
Volume 105, Issue 6
Abstract
A series of design curves are presented for the design of a full-depth hot-mix asphalt pavement used to provide support for railroad track construction. The design curves, which provide estimates of the anticipated service life of the asphalt pavement, are developed from critical asphalt strain data obtained from a finite element analysis procedure. The conversion from critical strain to fatigue life is accomplished using current techniques employed in highway pavement design. The effect of rail size, tie size, tie modulus of elasticity, asphalt modulus of elasticity and Poisson's ratio, soil modulus of elasticity and Poisson's ratio, asphalt thickness, and car loading and axle spacing are considered in the analysis procedure. A procedure for relating the fatigue limits of design sections for wheel loads of any magnitude is also presented.
