Schuylkill River—Major Crossing

Abstract
Two 30-in. (760-mm) gas pipelines were installed across the 600-ft (180-m) wide Schuylkill River in Philadelphia in a highly congested industrial area. The problems were the limited working room in the river as well as on its banks; the steep east bank was congested with numerous utilities and refinery facilities, both above and below ground; and the condensate removal system. The problems were overcome by obtaining records of the existing facilities and the geographic conditions, and the close coordination between engineering consultants, the contractor, and the owner.
