Abstract
A procedure for determining the operational method and schedule for a drawbridge is presented. The procedure is applied to a location with conflicting recreational traffic flows, both waterborne and vehicular. Many aspects of the drawbridge scheduling process are related to an analogous problem: timing vehicular traffic signals. The analogous aspects of the two situations are examined, and the results obtained for a drawbridge offered. A regression model relating bridge swing time to boat arrival patterns is developed. A vehicular delay function is also related to bridge swing time. The application of the procedure is presented using data for both waterborne and vehicular traffic at the Shrewsbury River Bridge in Highlands, New Jersey (at the entrance to the Sandy Hook Unit of the Gateway National Recreation Area). Changes in the method of bridge operation were indicated and implemented. The new fixed-time opening scheme resulted in significant reductions to vehicular traffic delay and were acceptable for marine requirements.
