Publication: Transportation Engineering Journal of ASCE
Volume 103, Issue 4
Abstract
The Airport Facilities Branch, Canadian Air Transportation Administration, Transport Canada, commissioned this study to update aircraft characteristics. The aircraft characteristics documented in the Aerospace Industries Association of America report CTOL Transport Aircraft Characteristics, Trends and Growth Projections, 1973, were reviewed and updated by the writer. Some l7 characteristics were updated. Maximum passenger capacity could grow from 500 currently to 600 by 1980, 800 by 1990, and 1,000 by 2000. Maximum gross weights could increase from a present 823,000 lb to 840,000 lb (373,000 kg to 381,000) by 1980, to 1,040,000 lb (471,000 kg) by 1990, and to 1,200,000 lb (544,000 kg) by the year 2000. Wingspans could go from a present 196 ft (59.78 m) to 215 ft (65.58 m), 230 ft (70.15m), and 240 ft (73.20 m) by 1980, 1990, and 2000, respectively. Similarly, body lengths could go from 229 ft (69.85 m), to 240 ft (73.20 m), 250 ft (76.25 m), and 260 ft (79.30 m) for 1980, 1990, and 2000, respectively.
