Study of In-Service Bitumenized Fiber Sewer Pipe
Publication: Transportation Engineering Journal of ASCE
Volume 103, Issue 2
Abstract
According to the Plumbing Bureau of the City of Tampa, from 1967 to 1973, over 2,000 bitumenized fiber sewer pipe failures occurred in the City of Tampa. This project involved the recovery and determination of the properties of bitumenized fiber sewer pipe that had been in service in residential sewer systems in the City of Tampa. The results of this study show that the strength of recovered bitumenized fiber pipe decreases with respect to time of service and the amount of water absorbed. Blisters and root penetration were frequently found and, either alone or in conjunction with rotary knife cleaning, also decrease the strength of the pipe.
