Segmental Bridges in Oregon

Publication: Transportation Engineering Journal of ASCE
Volume 102, Issue 4

Abstract

A method is described for bridge construction which combines precast concrete elements with cast-in-place concrete sections; the whole is then post-tensioned together to provide an integrated structural system. Long shallow spans provide safe grade separation structures as well as improved flood passage characteristics at river crossings. Some other advantages are falsework and on-site labor are minimized, flexibility in design results in efficient use of materials, and continuity of spans provides greater structural capacity with good dynamic response. Descriptions, photographs, and details are presented for 13 bridges of this type that have been built in Oregon since 1969. Material quantities for the bridge superstructures are tabulated.
