Abstract
If he is to locate and design highways of good visual quality, the highway designer needs: (1) A sound philosophy of design; (2) principles of visual quality; (3) tools and techniques to visually test the design prior to construction; and (4) a suitable design process which allows him to fully exploit items 1 through 3. A brief consideration of each of the preceding elements is presented. Included in the paper are: rules of alignment coordination; illustrations of highway designs showing good and poor visual quality; examples of computer-drawn perspectives of highways and suggested scales for physical models which are used as aids in visualizing the design in its early stages; and a suggested design process.
