Energy Consumption in Vehicle Manufacture
Publication: Transportation Engineering Journal of ASCE
Volume 101, Issue 2
Abstract
The recent fuel shortages have clearly demonstrated the need to be more concerned with the comparative energy efficiencies of various modes of transportation. A number of authors have considered the fuel consumed in the operation of various modes of transportation per passenger mile. In this note, a method is presented to calculate the fuel consumed in the manufacture of transportation vehicles. The contribution of manufacture to energy intensiveness may then be calculated by estimating the total number of miles traveled by each type of vehicle. This can be added to the fuel consumed in the operation of the respective vehicles to get the total energy intensiveness.
