Transportation Access to Special Generators
Publication: Transportation Engineering Journal of ASCE
Volume 100, Issue 3
Abstract
Special traffic generators, e.g., airports, universities, shopping centers, and hospitals, place special demands upon the transportation system. Access problems are frequently reflected by traffic congestion and extensive parking demands in the immediate area of the generator. There is a broad range of alternatives for dealing with this problem. They range from an automobile oriented policy wherein extensive parking facilities are provided to a transit oriented policy wherein substantial improvements are made in the level of transit service. In between these two extremes lie mixed policies. Twelve alternative systems were tested for a special generator located within an abstract city. The results indicated that highly efficient and frequent service will encourage increased transit patronage. In order to alleviate the expense of providing costly service additions to the regional transit system, specialized transit services might be instituted, such as express shuttle from remote parking lots.
