Recommended Design Procedure for VASI-2 Systems
Publication: Transportation Engineering Journal of ASCE
Volume 100, Issue 3
Abstract
The Airport Development Aid Program requires VASI-2 (visual approach slope indicator) systems on medium intensity runway lighting projects for utility runways. This new program requirement, and the accompanying technical reference data, have generated many questions from airport designers. The design procedure recommended herein identifies only one of many procedures which could be used. The writers intend for it to be a generalized procedure with sufficient flexibility to fit any particular site condition. The rationale developed in establishing this procedure encourages the selection of design variables to provide maximum runway length for landing and roll-out. The recommended electrical design includes the use of No. 8 AWG power cable. If home run voltage drop compensation is required, the use of buck-boost transformers, located at the power source, is recommended. Additional background data on VASI systems and equipment, which can be very helpful to the designer, are listed.
