Permanent Deformation in Asphaltic Materials
Publication: Transportation Engineering Journal of ASCE
Volume 100, Issue 1
Abstract
This review investigates traffic load-associated causes of permanent deformation in asphaltic materials. The environmental effects of temperature and moisture are also considered insofar as they affect the deformation process. Deformation in nonasphaltic layers which may contribute to deformation of the asphaltic layers they support is also given consideration. The following aspects of permanent deformation in asphalt pavements are specifically considered: (1) criteria for unacceptable load-associated deformation of a road surface; (2) susceptibility of materials and pavements to permanent deformation; (3) response of materials to repeated loading; and (4) prediction of rut depth-time or rut depth-traffic count relationships.
