Demand Activated Transportation for the Elderly

Abstract
A free transportation service has been established for elderly residents in the Model Neighborhood Area of Buffalo, NY. Transportation is provided on a demand activated basis, in which the rider is picked up at his door at a prearranged time, and taken to his specified destination within a designated 4-mile radius. This paper describes in detail the first five months of service (December, 1970 - April, 1971) including the nature of the organization needed to provide the service and trip records. Travel characteristics are presented in terms of daily person trips by purpose, origin-destination patterns, and time of day. The hourly trip volumes were greatest during the morning hours when 60% of all from-home trips were made. A third of these were medical trips. Days with wintry weather, in the form of blowing snow, produced a 25% decrease in daily usage.
