Multiple Use of City Transportation Corridor
Publication: Transportation Engineering Journal of ASCE
Volume 98, Issue 3
Abstract
The freeway or transportation corridor has become known as the despoiler of the cities. Concurrent with the demand for improved transportation, there is a new emphasis on environmental quality which makes it imperative that the freeway be reconsidered to determine what can be done to satisfy all requirements. No longer can the highway through a city be an intruder. It must complement and enhance the city. Transportation corridors planned for multiple use enhance the urban environment. Suggested approaches include roadways combined with shops, parks, promenades, residence, parking, recreation areas, and office buildings. The esthetics and functions of total urban living requirements are presented. Transportation corridors in Toronto, New York City, Milwaukee, Edinburgh, and Tokyo are reviewed and illustrated.
