Joint Utilization of Rights-of-Way
Publication: Transportation Engineering Journal of ASCE
Volume 98, Issue 2
Abstract
All modes of transportation—whether of people, goods or services— require a right-of-way. Examples of past and present joint use of these rights-of-way are presented. The need for greater cooperation among the various modes of transportation companies for sharing their rights-of-way is dependent upon social pressures. Some of the difficulties in increasing this joint utilization include economics, safety, ecology, space allocation and security. Two Engineering Foundation Research Conferences on this subject were held in 1969 and 1971. Potential methods for reaching agreement among different aspects of transportation modes for increasing joint usage are considered.
