Offshore Jetport for New York–New Jersey Megalopolis

Publication: Transportation Engineering Journal of ASCE
Volume 98, Issue 2

Abstract

Although the congestion at the New York–New Jersey metropolitan airports is becoming increasingly critical, there is no proposed site for a fourth airport which has gained the acceptance needed for planning and construction to commence in the foreseeable future. An offshore jetport is proposed off the Atlantic Coast of New Jersey, near the city of Long Branch, to serve the needs of the region by 1980. A combined dike and sand fill construction is proposed as being the most economical construction method for an offshore platform suitable for a large international airport, for the geological and hydrological conditions of the area. The Long Branch site is proposed as having met an optimum combination of planning and design criteria. Other sites acceptable in some respects are less acceptable in other aspects of the site selection process.
