Raw Water Transmission System for Springfield, Mass
Publication: Transportation Engineering Journal of ASCE
Volume 97, Issue 3
Abstract
A transmission system is designed and constructed to provide additional raw water supply to the City of Springfield, MA. Unusual features include the long supply and discharge pipelines, high head large capacity pumps, and a waterhammer control system for protection during power failure. Each pump is provided with a controlled discharge valve and a controlled suction surge relief valve. Operation of these control valves is developed with the aid of a high-speed digital computer. Simulated field test of power failures demonstrates the validity of principle used in the design of the waterhammer control system.
