Planning for the Metro
Publication: Transportation Engineering Journal of ASCE
Volume 96, Issue 3
Abstract
The Washington Metro has been the subject of numerous planning studies by several different agencies over the pas 17 yrs. During this period urban transportation planning has been revolutionized, both in analysis techniques and goal emphasis. The impact of these changes can be seen in the modifications made to transit plans for Washington over the years. A number of alternative transit plans have been evaluated including bus systems, commuter rail systems and all automobile systems. Planning for the Metro has been culminated by the adoption and initial funding of the 98 mile rapid transit system and its supporting elements. It is expected to cost $1,959,000 and to begin construction in 1969. Its acceptance by the local community is symbolized by its inclusion in all local and subregional plans prepared by local planning agencies and by its adoption by referendum for funding in suburban jurisdictions over the past year. It is an essential element for the well being and efficient operation of the National Capital Region in the years to come.
