Abstract
Technical programs have been developed by the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company in FORTRAN IV for use on IBM 360, Models 50 or 65. These programs are preliminary for use in railroad relocation and construction. The paper is written in the form of an outline of their actual use in the construction of a new or relocated railroad segment. The programs were designed to assist: statistical groups engaged in expenditure justification; location parties in finding right line; operation people in a preview of the resulting train operation; the construction engineer's forces in placing the line on the ground and measuring the contractor's pay quantities, the determination of bridge opening sizes, and the survey and procurement of right-of-way; the signal engineer in the spacing or respacing of signals. In addition, other programs are mentioned which may be used over the system clearing high-wide loads, the distribution of empty cars, and the purchase of engine fuel.
