Simplified Sag-Tension Equations for Power Lines
Publication: Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers
Volume 128, Issue 3
Abstract
A simplified, time-saving method of accurately calculating five of the most difficult overhead-conductor problems encountered is presented. Problems of broken conductor, permanent set, steep-hillside installations, insulator offset, and Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced (ACSR), in which the steel and aluminum have different tensile and thermal properties, can be solved with less than 10% of the time and effort required in conventional methods.
The method is based on carefully developed empirical equations that can be solved with a 10-in. log-log slide rule. The empirical equations allow a general solution with universal application to all practical problems. For estimating work, the equations presented herein may be used for quick approximate answers or may be used for precise calculations when making charts or tables for field use.
Solutions are offered only to those problems for which it is felt that this method is an improvement. Some of the fundamental ideas are presented in order to orient the reader and allow him to work through the examples. A bibliography of works in the field is also presented.
