Energy Relationships in Plastic Steel Structures

Abstract
An examination is made of the relationships among the various components of energy involved when a member of rectangular section and of steel having an upper and lower yield stress is bent beyond the yield point. Expressions are derived for the applied energy, recoverable energy, dissipated energy, latent energy, and complementary energy. Use is made of the results derived in order to determine the energy required to cause collapse of a simple beam, and to examine the redundancies and deformation of a redundant structure in the partially plastic condition
