Strength of Round Columns

Publication: Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers
Volume 128, Issue 2

Abstract

Results of an experimental investigation on the strength of axially and eccentrically loaded solid round columns of 2-3/4 in. diameter are presented. The tests were performed primarily on stress-relieved “T-1” constructional alloy steel bars. Nine axially loaded column tests and two eccentrically loaded column tests are reported. Comparison with a theory based on the “tangent modulus” concept for axially loaded columns, and with an inelastic-strength theory for the eccentrically loaded columns, shows that the ultimate strength of solid round columns may be predicted adequately by theory.
