Foundation Installation Requiring Recharging of Ground Water

Publication: Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers
Volume 126, Issue 2

Abstract

Ground water, at the site described herein, provided partial support, through buoyancy, for the five 14-story structures constructed. However, when the ground water was lowered to permit the new foundations to be installed in the dry, special precautions had to be taken to safeguard the adjacent existing structures. The soil conditions prevailing, the foundation treatment adopted, the proximity of existing adjacent structures, and the ground water conditions all have an important bearing on the requirements of the diffusion system described herein. This system was developed to maintain normal ground water levels in the adjacent areas during the construction period.
