Rivets and Bolts: Behavior of Beam-to-Column Connections

Abstract

The tests reported herein were performed as the first phase of an extensive program designed to study the general behavior of beam-to-column connections assembled with rivets or bolts; they included four standard flexible connections. Three of the test specimens were assembled with rivets and high-strength bolts and were tested at different moment-to-shear ratios. The fourth specimen was assembled entirely with rivets so as to provide a study of the effect of fastener on the behavior of the connections.
A study is made of the moment-rotation characteristics, the momentresisting capacity, the position of the center of rotation, the slip and shear deformation of the connections, the deformation of the fasteners, and the separation of the column flanges.
The tests reveal that the connections, although assumed for design purposes to behave as simple supports, actually provide some end restraint and that the restraint provided by the connections was increased slightly by the use of high-strenght bolts in lieu of rivets to fasten the connection angles to the column flanges.
