Seepage Losses from Parallel Canal Systems

Publication: Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers
Volume 126, Issue 1

Abstract

In most agricultural zones, especially in river valleys, the stratified soil is formed of a top clay layer of finite thickness and medium or low permeability, underlain by highly permeable layers of sand and gravel. The piezometric head in the lower, freely permeable layers is controlled by the river running in the valley. If, for any reason, the canals running in the top clay cap are run at higher water level than the piezometric leve l in the lower sand and gravel layers, a steady seepage flow will take place from the canals through the clay layer to the sand and gravel layers beneath.
