Abstract
This paper describes the design and performance of a zoned earth dam in the Sierra Nevada, California, on marginal glacial deposits. The pattern of stratification is so intricate that it was impracticable to determine all the essential geological features of the subsoil in advance of construction. Therefore, it was necessary to check on the design assumption during construction and to modify some details of the original design in accordance with the findings. As a result, the finished structure is as safe and satisfactory as if all the essential properties of the site had been known in advance of construction.
