Abstract
It was only one and a half centuries ago that Malthus reached the conclusion that “the power of population is indefinitely greater than the power of the earth to produce subsistence for man.” But Malthus failed to foresee the great advances in technology and their effectiveness in increasing both industrial and agricultural output per unit of human effort.
