Moments in Domes Built into Cylinders

Publication: Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers
Volume 122, Issue 1

Abstract

In thin shells of revolution that are symmetrically lo aded and built into vertical cylinders, significant moments occur in the neighborhood of the junction between dome and cylinder. These moments and the accompanying shears (under dead load and live load) are evaiuated approximately herein for domes having vertical boundaries. Membrane displacements and rotations at the dome edge are first determined, and moments and shears are found that satisfy the requirements of continuity between shell and cylinder. The results are plotted as nondimensional curves allowing the immediate evaluation of moments and shears in the range of parameters usually encountered in practice.
