Abstract

The regime theory is analyzed on the basis of the bed-load function. It has been found that, within the limits of the observed flows on which the regime theory was derived, the “silt” factor, fVR, depends on the sediment concentration of the channel flow whereas another factor, fRS, is a function of the size of the bed material. By using these functionul relationships between sediment characteristics and silt factors, the depth and slope of an a lluvial channel in regime can be determined either by the bed-load function or by the regime theory with almost no diffcrnncc between the two. The use of the regime theory for cond itions other than those in India and Pakista n should be approached with great care because the si lt factor depends also on the characteristics of the flow.
